Chrismansyah Rahadi (born under the name Christian Rahadi in Jakarta, Indonesia, 16 September 1949 - died in Jakarta, Indonesia, March 30, 2007 at the age of 57), better known as Chrisye's stage, is a singer and songwriter from Indonesia.
Born in Jakarta from the Chinese-Indonesian family, Chrisye became interested in music when he was young. While still studying in high school, Chrisye played bass guitar in a band he formed with his brother, Joris. In the late 1960s he became a member of the band of Tone of Nada (later renamed Gipsy). In 1973, after taking some time off, he followed the band to New York to play music. After returning to Indonesia for a short time, he returned to New York with another band, The Pro's. Returning to Indonesia, in 1976 he collaborated with Gipsy and Guruh Soekarnoputra to record the indie album Guruh Gipsy.
After the success of Guruh Gipsy, in 1977 Chrisye produced two of his best works, the "Small Candles" by James F. Sundah and the sound track album Hurricane Pasti Berlalu. The second success of this work made Chrisye recruited by Musica Studios, who with the record company he released his first solo album, Sabda Alam, in 1978. During his more than 25 years career he produced 18 other solo albums, and played in one movie: Seindah The moon (1981).
Chrisye died at his home in Jakarta on March 30, 2007 after years of lung cancer. He left a wife, Gusti Firoza Damayanti Noor, and four children.
Known for his smooth vocals and rigid stage style, Chrisye is considered one of the legendary Indonesian singers. Five albums including his work are listed in the list of 150 Best Indonesian Albums by Rolling Stone Indonesia music magazine. Five of his songs (and one that he supports) were featured in the best song list by the same magazine in 2009. Some of his albums were certified silver or higher. He received two lifetime achievement awards, one in 1993 from the BASF Awards and another in 2007 from SCTV television station. In 2011, Rolling Stone Indonesia recorded Chrisye as Indonesia's third best musician of all time.
